The fifth year of the m3 / Art in Space festival continues its tradition – every year the festival has taken place in a different Prague district, had a different theme and was prepared by a different curatorial duo. Thanks to this concept, which prevents artistic stagnation, visitors to the festival can encounter completely different approaches and perspectives on art and public space each year.
The 2021 festival is taking place in the extensive area of the central districts of Prague 6 and Prague 7.
The theme of this year’s festival is an exploration of the possibilities of the work of art as a tool for the healing of place and community, metaphorically speaking, City Therapy. We are aware that the city is not an inanimate backdrop to our lives, but one of its main actors. The dynamic pulse and zeitgeist of the city affects us all – sometimes more, sometimes less. Its physical and psychological functions directly influence the level of our individual condition. To achieve our therapeutic goals, it is necessary to search for effective art forms and tools specific to public space – the public language of art. It can enter into the discussion of urban concerns in a variety of ways: by encouraging, questioning, revealing, inspiring, criticising… Its manifestations can be material objects or social situations.
For the realisation of the m3 2021 festival, fourteen artists / art collectives were approached who have a personal relationship to the selected location – they have been living and working there for a long time. They therefore approach their creative task not only from the position of an artist but also as citizens – insiders who know the local conditions and have inner motivation to initiate a positive change there. Together, we have tried to locate several neuralgic points (places and themes) on the body of the urban organism in both city boroughs and to inspire activity that sees the city not only in terms of a functional mechanism, but also as an environment of joy and surprise.

A several-hour-long narrative performance in impressive settings and with the participation of many performers who will interpret historical facts, personal stories and memories of the inhabitants of Prague 6, as well as the emotions that these stories evoke. A recording of the performance, taken by cameras placed on the performers’ bodies, will be presented throughout the festival in the form of a projection on the outer wall of the National Technical Library building.

Members of the Rafani group will present a choreographed dance based on the rituals of the avant-garde movement Kindred of the Kibbo Kift, founded in Britain in 1920 by John Hargrave. This movement built its programme and artistic expression on an unusual blend of archaic and, on the contrary, very progressive cultural motifs: a holistic vision of the world, pacifism and the idea of coexistence with nature, perceived through all the senses with which humans have been endowed.

Participatory performance
In Ladislavův Park on the Vltava riverbank in Holešovice, there are two beach volleyball courts. However, it seems that nobody plays volleyball here. Let’s spread the nets between the posts again and let’s play… The game will be preceded by an artistic performance of washing laundry in the river and hanging it out between the posts instead of the volleyball net. Through joint “household” work and through play, the abandoned place will be repopulated.

Veleslavín Chateau
Water is a symbol of the life of the landscape; it has the power to restore the physical and psychological functions of the local ecosystem, including those of its human inhabitants. In the grounds and in the surroundings of Veleslavín Chateau, whose fate she has been following for a long time, the artist has therefore focused on neglected water features lost in formerly cultivated, now desolate, urban nature. In order to restore and make visible the sites of once important sources of water and recreation, she initiated a “cleaning of the Chateau pond” by people living in the vicinity of the Chateau. However, in her large-scale installation, the main manifestation of the invisible organic processes in the landscape are colonies of fungi made from locally found melted plastic trash cast into concrete moulds, which seemed to demand attention and care by their presence.
Hey Moon
Hey Moon
The design of a metal sculpture for the garden of the Institute of Physics of the Academy of Sciences works with the genius loci of the whole site, which, like many other buildings in the Ořechovka area and the whole of Prague 6, was built in the 1920s in the style of Rondocubism. The shapes typical of this architecture form the backdrop for almost all of the artist’s life and closely correspond to the morphology of her current artistic work. This factor is also one of the keys to the first entry of the artist (until now mainly a painter) into public space in the form of a sculptural installation.

The “Kafkárna” is the building of the former studio of the sculptor Bohumil Kafka, which has been continuously used for almost a hundred years for the creation of works of art intended primarily for public space. Since 1990, it has been used by the sculpture studio of the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design (UMPRUM). The sculptor Matouš Lipus and thirteen other artists have made small artistic interventions in its ancient garden which has served mainly as a repository for old sculptures for decades. An aqueduct, beds of perennial flowers, a bivouac in a tree, a greenhouse, a gaming table, paintings and photographs, an artist’s book of photographs, performances and other artistic actions bring attention and benefits to a neglected place.

Removal and Delineation
Removal and Delineation
The site of the artistic research and installation of the artist is a large part of the Letenské Sady area around the tram terminus at Špejchar. In the centre of the turning loop, there is a three-metre high monument erected on 17 November 1989, to commemorate the Kolonka site, a dormitory for poor students. The large complex of wooden buildings in the Rondocubist style was built on the initiative and at the expense of the entrepreneur Václav Havel in 1920, according to plans by architect Miloš Vaněček, and stood here until the 1970s. The work consists in covering up this monument, probably the last one created during the previous regime. It raises question marks not only about the history of the site, but also reflects on the issue of preserving architectural and historical values in public space in the context of changing political conditions. Part of the work is the intention to performatively delineate the ground plan of the Kolonka site in collaboration with former residents and surveyors.
Letná Plain
Letná Plain
Letná Plain is an empty space that is filled with temporary content, thanks to human activity: kite flying, demonstrations, circuses, sports, concerts, parades. Tomáš Svoboda’s interest focuses on the systems and principles of the current and past mechanisms of power, media and communication, and their social and psychological laws. A retrospective look at the historical positions of demonstrations on Letná Plain, from the May Day celebrations under the communist regime, through military parades, to the Velvet Revolution and the Million Moments for Democracy demonstrations, inspired the artist to temporarily intervene – to inscribe the motif of a defective slogan in the sand of the plain.

Speech
The purpose of the installation of an individual rostrum with built-in sound equipment on Letná Plain is to give each of the inhabitants of Prague a symbolic opportunity to send a message to the world by making their own speech. Despite the seemingly already established democratic structure, freedom of speech is still an uncertain and often neglected right which, moreover, suffers significantly due to the pandemic limitations. Despite external obstacles, however, it is necessary not only to express one’s opinion at home or in the manipulative environment of social networks, but also to express it publicly and to cultivate the forms of this expression through public debate.

Obyčejné místo / Common Place
The French designer Marie Doucet conducts research at the intersection of art and design. For the m3 Festival, she has collected many memories of the favourite locations of her neighbours from Prague 7. Places that seem ordinary but are significant to the individual because they are associated with a unique personal memory and experience. The collected testimonies are recorded by the author in the form of hand-embroidery on textile maps and shared with the people in her quarter in the windows of the local polyclinic, shops, library and cafes.

The Banks of the Vltava
In November 2020, the artists carried out an artistic happening, without public participation, which brought both of them a strong personal experience and a recognition of the magical potential the river has as a natural geographical boundary for the identity of the surrounding neighbourhoods. The course of the happening, which involved mapping the banks of the Vltava in the area between Prague 7 and Prague 8, was shared by the artists with local citizens through postcards which record the happening and invite them to do the same themselves.

Drutěva
Since 1950, “DRUTĚVA”, a cooperative of workshops and services employing disabled citizens, has been located in Dělnická Street near the Libeň Bridge. The artist was led to the discovery and subsequent communication with the cooperative by his interest in the working-class character of lower Holešovice, based on the industrial history of the area. His installation, formally developing the line of the railing in front of Drutěva, forms a symbolic “stand” – an exhibition space in which the work is shown of people who have been associated with the workshops and thus with the site for decades.

Hasn’t There Been a Better Bad Idea?
The object reminds one of the forgotten life and history of Zátory – the industrial part of Prague 7 – which, except for a few remains, was demolished in the 1970s. Based on archival research and interviews with surviving witnesses, the artist has created an archetypal story of life in this quarter before it became devastated. She abstracted one particular situation from this story, symbolised by the object of a street basketball hoop – a situation that might seem playful and poetic in a less tragic context.

Jiří Kovanda has lived in Prague 7 since the 1980s and has been visiting Stromovka park for at least as long, observing the changes in its environment in terms of natural conditions and the atmosphere for visitors. He confronts his reflections on this experience with the scientific reflection of biologist RNDr. Jiří Sádlo who has also been interested in the development of the Troja Basin biotope for a long time. On two separate notice boards, located near the little bridge to Císařský ostrov, both authors present the results of their academic and artistic reflections on the development of the Stromovka ecosystem.

An artistic performance in which members of the Rafani group will present a choreographed dance based on the rituals of the avant-garde Kibbo Kift movement. Founded in Britain in 1920 by John Hargrave, the Kindred of the Kibbo Kift movement built its programme and artistic expression on an unusual blend of archaic and very progressive cultural motifs: a holistic vision of the world, pacifism, and coexistence with nature perceived through all the senses.

The work for the municipal land managed by the cooperative, adjacent to the Ve Struhách cooperative houses, takes the physical form of a garden seating area – a community gathering place. However, this place is also an audio installation that carries a hidden message: it reveals the buried layers of the memory of a place defined by the now forgotten stories of collective civic initiatives in this place many decades ago. The work is primarily based on interviews with surviving witnesses and is intended for both local residents, to whom it reveals the genesis of their homes, and for visitors from outside, who may be surprised by the extent of the participatory activities of previous generations.

Body of the History / Remembrance
As in her previous work, the artist uses a group performance with staged elements to interpret certain aspects of the contemporary world. A several-hour-long performance in impressive settings will take place with the participation of at least a dozen performers who will use their own bodies to interpret historical facts and personal stories and memories of the inhabitants of Prague 6 in a layered collage. In this case, a recording of the performance, taken by cameras placed on the bodies of all the performers, will be an inseparable part of the work and will be presented throughout the festival in the form of a projection on the outer wall of the National Technical Library building.
